By 1908, nearly every building on the hospital campus was overcrowded. Talbot was full, and Osgood Cottage was pressed into service as housing for six patients as opposed to one. Codman was also full, and the hospital was in need of a similar building for “disturbed” male patients. The women’s wards in the main hospital building were also overcrowded, and the old wards were in desperate need of refurbishing. (Courtesy Massachusetts Department of Mental Health.)

In order to relieve the overcrowding in Codman, the Childs Building was constructed, and the acute female cases were moved to the new building, leaving Codman to become the new home for acute male cases. Childs was a “thoroughly up-to-date” two-story hospital building with grill enclosed veranda, provisions for hydrotherapy, and an electrotherapy suite. (Courtesy Westborough Public Library.)
